Bridge Medicare Program

It's never too late to meet your goals.

Maintaining a healthy weight can become more challenging with age, but it's never too late to improve your health. For many Medicare beneficiaries living with obesity, new treatment options may soon become more affordable through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.

Beginning July 1, 2026, CMS is launching the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a temporary demonstration program that provides eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries access to certain FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for weight management. The program is scheduled to continue through December 31, 2027.

What Is the CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a federal demonstration program administered by CMS, not by individual medical practices or insurance plans. It was created to expand access to certain GLP-1 medications prescribed specifically for weight management while CMS gathers data to help inform future Medicare policy.

Under the program, eligible beneficiaries may obtain covered GLP-1 medications with a $50 monthly copay. The program operates outside the standard Medicare Part D benefit and has its own prior authorization and claims process.

Who May Be Eligible?

Eligibility is determined by CMS and depends on several factors, including:

  • Enrollment in Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage
  • Meeting the program's clinical criteria for weight management

BMI: 35 and over, BMI 30 and over w/ co-morbidities, BMI 27 w/ Pre-Diabetes

  • Receiving a prescription from a qualified healthcare provider
  • Obtaining the required prior authorization through the CMS program

Individuals already receiving Medicare coverage for a GLP-1 medication for conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or certain cardiovascular indications generally receive those medications through their regular Part D coverage rather than the Bridge program.

Covered Medications

CMS currently includes certain FDA-approved GLP-1 medications used for weight management under the demonstration program, including eligible formulations of Wegovy®, Zepbound®, and other medications approved by CMS. Covered medications and eligibility requirements may change over time.

The Importance of Medical Supervision

GLP-1 medications are only one part of successful weight management. A healthcare provider should evaluate your medical history, medications, lifestyle, and treatment goals to determine whether a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for you.

Healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and ongoing follow-up remain essential parts of long-term success.
